A half-covered sky tonight, with air barely moving with the barometer flat. The productive water at Frederick Lake will be around structure within a cast of the bank. Quiet conditions all day, with the night marginally better. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Frederick Lake is one of the Greater Sudbury waters in Ontario. Around the bank it is rolling bush. At some 3.30 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. There is roughly 18 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. It is among the larger waters listed here for Greater Sudbury. For a base, Capreol sits 40 km out. Valley East lies 49 km off, Rayside-Balfour another 61 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Greater Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, yellow perch and northern pike. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Frederick Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Averages move between -15°C in January and 18°C in July. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. On average, late April opens the water and late November closes it again. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. At Frederick Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Elbow Lake is 2.3 km off. Check the position at Frederick Lake before loading the car.
