Dull, settled light over the water, with mild air moving in from the W and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at First Lake is the shallows early and the drop later. The strongest window is the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

First Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. The country here is pine and birch. Surface area is around 84 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The shoreline runs about 7.2 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. You are 75 km from Dowling. Then Rayside-Balfour, 79 km, and Valley East, 87 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Fish documented in Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. First Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -15°C at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. It sets the rhythm of the year at First Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Wapejo Lake sits 2.3 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on First Lake before loading the car.
