Stars out and no cloud tonight, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. Whatever swims in Faber Lake should be near the calm side of the wind. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today.

Faber Lake sits in Thunder Bay District, out in Ontario. The country round it is spruce and muskeg from end to end. At about 33 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 9.1 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. The nearest place of any size is Manitouwadge, 37 km away. Then Longlac, 58 km, and Geraldton, 80 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Thunder Bay District: cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Anyone new to Faber Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Averages here run 16°C at the top of summer and -18°C at the bottom of winter. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. The season on Faber Lake follows the weather closely.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Should this one be busy, Eden Lake is 1.8 km off. Check the position at Faber Lake before loading the car.
