A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with a gentle ripple from the SSW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Essens Lake along the shaded margin through bright spells. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Essens Lake is one of the Frontenac County waters in Ontario. The land about it is rolling bush. Around 22 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. You are looking at roughly 5.6 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. Sharbot Lake lies 47 km from the water. Madoc follows at 49 km, then Tweed at 50 km. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Frontenac County, recorded fish include pumpkinseed, bluegill and rock bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Essens Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Typical July readings run about 19°C; by January the average is down near -11°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near early December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. At Essens Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite is mapped about 240 m away, which makes an early start easier. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Clutes Lake at 1 km is the sensible second choice. For Essens Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
