An even grey lid over the water, with barely a breath of wind and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Emma Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Ontario holds Emma Lake, in Sudbury. The surface lies 195 metres up. Roughly 39 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Some 11 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Ontario listings. Start from Markstay-Warren, 45 km down the road. Then Greater Sudbury, 49 km, and Lively, 51 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Emma Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Climate normals give 19°C for July and -12°C for January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about early December in an average year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. It holds true on Emma Lake more years than not.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. If the gate is shut, Ada Lake at 1.3 km is the nearest alternative. For Emma Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
