A grey, even sky over the water, with barely a breath of wind and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Elgie Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Elgie Lake is one of the Algoma waters in Ontario. The water sits 332 metres up. The water covers around 1.72 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. At about 7.5 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Size puts it in the front rank of our Algoma list. The closest town, Hornepayne, is 16 km distant. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 345 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Survey and observation records for Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Elgie Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Plan around that when you fish Elgie Lake.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Bear Lake is 4.4 km off. Nothing on Elgie Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
