Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a light SSW breeze and no real change in pressure. The productive water at Dows Lake will be around structure within a cast of the bank. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Dows Lake in the Ottawa part of Ontario. It stands 60 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 23 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.6 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. For a base, Ottawa South sits 1.1 km out. Beyond it, The Glebe at 1.4 km and Ottawa at 1.9 km. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Ottawa include pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, white sucker, yellow perch and common carp. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Dows Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 21°C in July and bottoms out near -11°C in January. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at early December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Dows Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A slipway is marked about 460 m from here. There is a marina 420 m away for anyone bringing a boat. A car park sits roughly 350 m away. There is a mapped landing stage 180 m away. Public toilets are recorded roughly 440 m off. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Brewer Park Pond is 1.4 km off.
