Solid cloud cover today, with a proper ripple driven from the NW and pressure sitting still. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Downie Lake. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Downie Lake lies in Cochrane District, in Ontario. It lies 94 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 31 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.6 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Hearst is the closest town at 173 km. Thunder Bay sits 471 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Cochrane District records list northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker and Iowa darter among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Work Downie Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The seasonal spread runs -21°C to 16°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Expect Downie Lake to follow that timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Cochrane Lake sits 12 km off and takes the overflow. Rules at Downie Lake are worth checking on the day.
