A crisp, open sky after dark, with just enough WSW wind to ripple the surface and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Dot Lake should come off the first drop-off and weed lines. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Nipissing District end of Ontario holds Dot Lake. This is pine and birch country. Surface area runs to about 5 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Most waters listed here for Nipissing District are larger. Huntsville at 26 km is the nearest place to stop. Beyond it, United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde at 46 km and Haliburton Village at 52 km. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The near bank of Dot Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -12°C at the bottom of winter. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Dot Lake follows the weather closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Samlet Lake sits 0.6 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Dot Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
