An even grey lid over the water, with a useful NW wind pushing food about and steady pressure. Start the search at Diver Lake along windblown banks where food collects. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Diver Lake is set in Sudbury, Ontario. The country round it is rolling bush from end to end. It runs to roughly 18 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 3.0 km, small enough to learn in a day. The nearest town is Dowling, 74 km away. After that come Rayside-Balfour at 75 km and Capreol at 76 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Diver Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Plan any trip to Diver Lake around it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, Gwylan Lake is 2.3 km off. For Diver Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
