Flat light and a covered sky today, with a working SSW breeze and pressure sitting still. The fish at Deer Lake are likely to sit near the shallows early and the drop later. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Deer Lake is a Lanark County water, in Ontario. It sits at 206 metres above sea level. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Sharbot Lake at 10 km is the nearest place to stop. Perth lies 27 km off, Smiths Falls another 44 km. Within a short drive: Rock Lake out at 1.6 km, 2.3 km out stands Lake of the Hills, Little Rock Lake out at 3 km, 3.8 km out stands Davern Lake and Clear Lake out at 3.8 km. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Lanark County cover pumpkinseed, rock bass and smallmouth bass. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Deer Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Averages move between -10°C in January and 20°C in July. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near early December. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Deer Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Rock Lake is 1.6 km off. Signs at Deer Lake carry more weight than any list.
