Flat light and a covered sky today, with mild air moving in from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Day Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Day Lake lies within the bounds of Cochrane District, Ontario. The surface lies 266 metres up. Roughly 54 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The full circuit measures close to 3.7 km on foot. Kapuskasing lies 53 km from the water. Beyond it, Smooth Rock Falls at 66 km and Timmins at 93 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Cochrane District, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Day Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
The year swings from about -18°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Day Lake rarely departs from it.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Holden Lake at 2.5 km is the sensible second choice. Treat Day Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
