A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with light air out of the NNW with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Dark Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Night
Set in Rainy River District, Ontario, this is Dark Lake. It sits in pine and birch country. Roughly 13 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Our Rainy River District list holds plenty of bigger water. Ely is the closest place, 35 km off. It is 202 km to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Rainy River District: northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The near bank of Dark Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July near 19°C and January near -16°C on the long-run figures. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Dark Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Public toilets are recorded roughly 250 m off. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. The nearest alternative is Rush Lake, 0.9 km out. Check the position on Dark Lake before loading the car.
