A cloudless sky and strong light today, with a soft WNW wind with a settled glass. Fish at Daniels Lake should hold close to any hard bottom among the soft. The day peaks in the evening. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Thunder Bay District, Daniels Lake is an Ontario water. The water sits 501 metres up. This is sizeable water at about 2.07 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. Shoreline length is close to 11 km, and each section fishes a little differently. On our Thunder Bay District list it sits near the top for size. Start from Grand Marais, 37 km down the road. Further out sit Neebing (74 km) and Parkdale (88 km). The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Daniels Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -15°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The water is typically free of ice between late April and mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. On Daniels Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is a jetty 1.2 km off, worth knowing on a busy day. You can camp 140 m off, which suits an early start. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Bogenho Lake, 1.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Daniels Lake in what we hold.
