Current Lake, Ontario: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  Current Lake is a Thunder Bay District water, Ontario side. It lies 471 metres above sea level. With some 93 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 7.3 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Amethyst Harbour sits 26 km from the bank. Shuniah Township follows at 30 km, then Lappe at 37 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.

• Where to Fish on Current Lake

  No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. At Current Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -18°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Current Lake follows the weather closely.

• Tackle & Baits

  Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Teardrop Lake at 5.6 km is the sensible second choice. What applies at Current Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
