A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a busy W wind on the open water and pressure sitting still. Activity on Cranberry Lake should centre on the margins and the shelf beyond them. A broad window opens from night into morning. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

In Ontario, Cranberry Lake falls inside Parry Sound District. The bank is 176 metres above sea level. The water covers some 47 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Around 5.1 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Supplies mean a trip to Parry Sound, 45 km off. Greater Sudbury sits 105 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No border sits close enough to matter.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Parry Sound District include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Cranberry Lake decides where the fish sit.
July runs about 19°C on average, January about -9°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. From about mid April to around early December, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Anyone fishing Cranberry Lake regularly works to that calendar.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Bird Lake, 5.2 km away. For Cranberry Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
