Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a consistent blow out of the WNW and pressure sitting still. Fish at Cote Lake should hold close to shallow cover and weed edges. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Cote Lake is a Kenora District water, Ontario side. Height above sea level is 414 metres. Surface area is around 40 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The edge runs 2.4 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The town to know is Ignace, 24 km out. Thunder Bay sits 225 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Kenora District, recorded fish include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Cote Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Between January at about -18°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. On average, late April opens the water and mid November closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Time your trip to Cote Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. The nearest alternative is Hearsey Lake, 1.5 km out. Rules at Cote Lake are worth checking on the day.
