Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with light air out of the WNW and pressure going nowhere. Start the search at Cork Lake along the seam between weed and open water. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Look for Cork Lake in the Thunder Bay District part of Ontario. Height above sea level is 325 metres. Surface area is around 23 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Shoreline comes to about 2.0 km, small enough to learn in a day. Greenstone lies 69 km from the water. Further out sit Geraldton (82 km) and Longlac (107 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Cork Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -20°C in January. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Cork Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Ulster Lake sits 0.7 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Cork Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
