Partly cloudy skies today, with steady pressure of wind from the WNW with the barometer flat. The productive water at Clare Lake will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. A day for grinding out a result rather than chasing a peak. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Clare Lake is one of the Kenora District listings for Ontario. It stands 391 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 83 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The shoreline runs about 7.4 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Start from Kenora, 39 km down the road. Beyond it, Vermilion Bay at 41 km and Dryden at 86 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Clare Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
The warm month here averages 18°C; the cold one sits at -17°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. It holds true on Clare Lake more years than not.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Bean Lake, 1.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Clare Lake are worth checking on the day.
