Bands of rain crossing through the day, with hardly a ripple anywhere with the glass holding level. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at Chenier Lake. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Out in Cochrane District, Ontario, sits Chenier Lake. What surrounds it is northern bush. It covers about 10 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. The edge runs 1.4 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Cochrane sits 24 km from here and is the nearest stop. It is 290 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Open biodiversity records for Cochrane District list northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Work Chenier Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
On the long-term average, July reads 17°C and January reads -18°C. This far north the hard season runs and runs. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. The water is typically free of ice between early May and mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Plan around that when you fish Chenier Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Hydro Lake at 5.5 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Chenier Lake in what we hold.
