Flat light and a covered sky today, with a consistent blow out of the SW and the barometer holding steady. Start the search at Chalice Lake along the shallows early and the drop later. The day peaks in the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Chalice Lake is a Timiskaming District water, Ontario side. Land around it is lake country bush. Roughly 36 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With about 3.7 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Nearest town is Temiskaming Shores, 62 km off. Haileybury is 67 km away, with Englehart at 69 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth figures are not published for this one. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Timiskaming District cover brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. The county list is broader than any single water. Chalice Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Chalice Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Access is not recorded for this water. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Failing this one, try Chance Lake, 1.7 km away. For Chalice Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
