Solid cloud cover today, with stillness over the whole water and no real change in pressure. Fish at Cavell Lake should hold close to the calm side of the wind. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

You will find Cavell Lake in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Everything around it is northern bush. It runs to roughly 82 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Some 5.1 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. The town to know is Greenstone, 46 km out. After that come Geraldton at 49 km and Longlac at 60 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
We hold no depth figure for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Thunder Bay District records list cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Cavell Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
The year swings from about -20°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Cavell Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Tinkle Lake is 7.1 km distant. Treat access at Cavell Lake as something to verify.
