Soft grey light all day today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and pressure going nowhere. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at Caufield Lake. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Algoma end of Ontario holds Caufield Lake. It sits at 198 metres above sea level. It measures about 21 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The full circuit measures close to 2.2 km on foot. It is low-lying compared with other Ontario water we list. The town to know is Thessalon, 23 km out. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 222 km off. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Algoma: walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Caufield Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -10°C. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to early December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Caufield Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Deer Lake is 5 km off. Signs at Caufield Lake carry more weight than any list.
