Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a working WNW breeze with the glass holding level. Fish at Cat Lake should hold close to the seam between weed and open water. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

In Ontario, Cat Lake falls inside Kenora District. The water sits 395 metres up. This is big water, about 110.70 sq km, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. The form is ragged, which puts a lot of structure within casting range. Size puts it in the front rank of our Kenora District list. For supplies, Red Lake is 149 km out. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 413 km away. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Fish Cat Lake to its features, not to its size.
The year swings from about -21°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. From about early May to around early November, expect open water on the long-run figures. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. The season on Cat Lake follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Bowen Lake, 20 km away. Where Cat Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
