A bright day with hardly any cloud, with dead-still conditions and pressure sitting still. On Canon Lake, work sheltered bays and points first. If you pick one session, make it the middle of the day. Keep moving until you find them. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

In Ontario, Canon Lake belongs to Kenora District. Land around it is lake country bush. Around 76 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. With 7.3 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Supplies mean a trip to Ignace, 58 km off. The nearest city of size is Thunder Bay, 185 km away. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker among the fish reported. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The near bank of Canon Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July near 18°C and January near -20°C on the long-run figures. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Anyone fishing Canon Lake regularly works to that calendar.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Islandia Lake, 4.6 km out. What applies at Canon Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
