A half-covered sky tonight, with a proper ripple driven from the W with the barometer flat. The productive water at Canoe Lake will be around structure within a cast of the bank. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Morning
Set in Renfrew County, Ontario, this is Canoe Lake. The water sits 282 metres up. Roughly 19 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. A shoreline of some 1.9 km keeps the choices simple. Bancroft sits 40 km from here and is the nearest stop. Eganville is 44 km and Pembroke 63 km. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Renfrew County include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch and rock bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Canoe Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
The range across the year is -12°C to 19°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. The season on Canoe Lake follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is a jetty 660 m off, worth knowing on a busy day. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Negeek Lake, 2.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Canoe Lake are worth checking on the day.
