An even grey lid over the water, with a firm W blow with a settled glass. Canis Lake should fish best around the first drop-off and weed lines today. One clear peak today: the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

You will find Canis Lake in Manitoulin District, Ontario. It sits in rolling bush country. With some 27 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 3.5 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Nearest place of any size is Espanola, 27 km away. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 62 km distant. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Manitoulin District: rainbow smelt, lake whitefish, cisco, yellow perch and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The shape of Canis Lake decides where the fish sit.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in July and bottoms out near -10°C in January. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about early December in an average year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Canis Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Spark Lake at 3.3 km is the sensible second choice.
