Solid cloud cover today, with air barely moving with a settled glass. Start the search at Calstock Lake along windblown banks where food collects. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Calstock Lake in Cochrane District, Ontario. The setting is taiga. It runs to roughly 14 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Bank access stretches around 2.4 km in total. The nearest place of any size is Hearst, 37 km away. Hornepayne is 77 km away, with Kapuskasing at 131 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Cochrane District records list northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker among the fish reported. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Calstock Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -18°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Calstock Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is West Lake, 1 km out. None of that is settled for Calstock Lake in what we hold.
