Clear overhead with good moonlight, with mild air moving in from the WNW and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Calm Lake will be around shallow cover and weed edges. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

The Rainy River District end of Ontario holds Calm Lake. This is rolling bush ground. It covers about 16.06 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. On our Rainy River District list it sits near the top for size. Atikokan is the closest town at 34 km. Thunder Bay sits 214 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Rainy River District, recorded fish include northern pike, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Calm Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -17°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Calm Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Miners Lake sits 2.1 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing here settles the position at Calm Lake for certain.
