Cloud coming and going through the night, with enough SW wind to stack food downwind with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Burns Long Lake is points where shallow meets deep. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient.

The Renfrew County end of Ontario holds Burns Long Lake. It stands 338 metres above sea level. Roughly 26 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Shoreline comes to about 3.2 km, small enough to learn in a day. For a base, Eganville sits 22 km out. Renfrew lies 34 km off, Cobden another 36 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Renfrew County records list smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Take Burns Long Lake a stretch at a time.
In an average year July sits at 19°C and January at -12°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. From about late April to around early December, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Burns Long Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Crutch Lake at 1.3 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Burns Long Lake before loading the car.
