Fresh rain topping the water up today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and no real change in pressure. Activity on Bull Lake should centre on the margins and the shelf beyond them. A stay-home graph, with the morning as the one excuse to go. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

This water sits in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Height above sea level is 399 metres. At 10 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Thunder Bay District list. Some 14 km away sits Schreiber, the nearest settlement. Further out sit Terrace Bay (26 km) and Nipigon (65 km). The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Thunder Bay District list cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Bull Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Averages move between -16°C in January and 16°C in July. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. The water is typically free of ice between early May and mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. At Bull Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Hornblende Lake at 1.1 km is the nearest alternative. Treat access at Bull Lake as something to verify.
