An even grey lid over the water, with the surface near flat with the barometer flat. Start the search at Brute Lake along sheltered bays and points. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Brute Lake sits within Nipissing District in Ontario. It sits at 303 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 82 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. With 6.0 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Few waters listed in Nipissing District are bigger. Témiscaming is the closest town at 32 km. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 126 km off. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Brute Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -15°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. That shapes the year on Brute Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Shallow Lake is 1.7 km distant. None of that is settled for Brute Lake in what we hold.
