Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a working NW breeze and pressure going nowhere. The water to cover at Boot Lake is points where shallow meets deep. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Boot Lake sits in Rainy River District, out in Ontario. The country here is lake country bush. It measures about 40 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. There is roughly 5.5 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Atikokan at 27 km is the nearest place to stop. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 152 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Rainy River District records list northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye among the fish reported. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. The shape of Boot Lake decides where the fish sit.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -17°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. The open-water window runs from around late April to about mid November in an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. That shapes the year on Boot Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Car Lake at 1.3 km is the sensible second choice. What applies at Boot Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
