A closed sky with even light today, with air barely moving with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Blackburn Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

The Timiskaming District end of Ontario holds Blackburn Lake. The bank is 352 metres above sea level. At about 43 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. With 5.8 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. 39 km away sits Kirkland Lake, the nearest town. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 182 km distant. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Timiskaming District, recorded fish include brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Treat Blackburn Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 17°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Blackburn Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Canoe Lake, 1.1 km out. For Blackburn Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
