A wet system passing over today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NNW and no real change in pressure. On Black Lake, work the shallows early and the drop later first. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Pick two or three spots and rotate them. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Black Lake belongs to Frontenac County, Ontario. The bank is 151 metres above sea level. Around 12 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. A shoreline of some 1.6 km keeps the choices simple. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Nearest town is Sharpton/Glenvale, 22 km off. The big place round here is Kingston, 37 km distant. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Frontenac County list pumpkinseed, bluegill and rock bass. The county list is broader than any single water. Black Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Expect July to average close to 20°C, with January the cold end at about -9°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near early December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Black Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, First Depot Lake is 1 km off. What applies at Black Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
