A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a stiffish breeze from the NW with a settled glass. On Beaver Lake, work shallow cover and weed edges first. Even, unhurried fishing on the cards. Change depth before you change anything else. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

The Kenora District entry here is Beaver Lake, in Ontario. The country here is lake country bush. At 10 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Kenora District. Head to Kenora, 20 km away, for anything you forgot. Vermilion Bay follows at 60 km, then Moose Lake at 102 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Beaver Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warm month here averages 19°C; the cold one sits at -17°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Beaver Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try Scovil Lake, 0.9 km away. Rules at Beaver Lake are worth checking on the day.
