Bands of rain crossing through the day, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Battley Lake should come off sheltered bays and points. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Battley Lake belongs to Sudbury, Ontario. Everything around it is spruce and muskeg. The water covers some 69 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. There is roughly 5.0 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. For supplies, Chapleau is 74 km out. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 306 km distant. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Sudbury records list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter among the fish reported. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Battley Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -17°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Battley Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Trem Lake is 1.2 km distant. For Battley Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
