Dull, settled light over the water, with a light SSE breeze with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Bat Lake should be near structure within a cast of the bank. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Bat Lake stands in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Boreal forest runs right down to the water. Surface area runs to about 2 hectares — small enough to read in one session. On size it sits at the modest end of our Thunder Bay District list. Nearest town is Amethyst Harbour, 34 km off. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 65 km away. Also on the doorstep: Miner Lake (1 km), Fall Lake at 1.1 km, Moose Lake (1.8 km), Harris Lake at 3.4 km and Gulch Lake (3.9 km). This one is safely inside the county line.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Bat Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Typical July readings run about 17°C; by January the average is down near -16°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Bat Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. A parking area is marked roughly 120 m out. Fishing from a pier is possible 110 m away. There are toilets 230 m off. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Miner Lake sits 1 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Bat Lake before loading the car.
