Stars out and no cloud tonight, with air barely moving and the barometer holding steady. Fish at Bagpipe Lake should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. A broad window opens from afternoon into evening. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Out in Sudbury, Ontario, sits Bagpipe Lake. The bank is 413 metres above sea level. The water covers some 40 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Shoreline length is close to 5.7 km, and each section fishes a little differently. The town to know is Dowling, 65 km out. Rayside-Balfour is 71 km and Azilda 82 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Sudbury cover smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Bagpipe Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Typical July readings run about 17°C; by January the average is down near -15°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Bagpipe Lake that shapes the whole year.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Squirrel Lake sits 3.1 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Bagpipe Lake in what we hold.
