No direct sun expected today, with the water lying quiet with the barometer flat. Fish at Arguing Lake should hold close to shallow cover and weed edges. Save your energy for the morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Arguing Lake lies in Kenora District, in Ontario. What surrounds it is northern bush. At some 3.80 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. There is roughly 24 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Oxford House at 339 km is the nearest place to stop. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 629 km distant. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. Arguing Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between January at about -23°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Winter locks it down, and mid May brings it back. Climate averages put the opening at about mid May and the closing near early November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Arguing Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Derniere Lake, 6.7 km out. Check the position on Arguing Lake before loading the car.
