Heavy overcast holding through the day, with just enough SSE wind to ripple the surface and pressure going nowhere. Start the search at Andy Lake along windblown banks where food collects. Plan around the stretch from night into morning. Keep moving until you find them. A hard-frost feel to the day; keep expectations modest.

Andy Lake is one of the Kenora District waters in Ontario. This is northern bush ground. At some 1.34 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The margin runs to about 5.7 km in total. Sioux Lookout at 171 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Red Lake (172 km) and Golden (172 km). No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Open biodiversity records for Kenora District list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The shape of Andy Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -21°C at the bottom of winter. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to early November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Andy Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Saddle Creek is 7.6 km off. Signs at Andy Lake carry more weight than any list.
