An even grey lid over the water, with stillness over the whole water and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Heart Lake along bays that hold the day's warmth. An ordinary day throughout, patience over timing. Change depth before you change anything else. Cold hands, careful casts: precision is everything today.

Look for Heart Lake in Nunavut. It stands 1 metres above sea level. At 2.40 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. There is roughly 7.5 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Nunavut. Nearest place of any size is Cambridge Bay, 731 km away. Pond Inlet follows at 736 km, then Gjoa Haven at 779 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. This is tidal water: the state of the tide decides where fish sit, so plan the session around it. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The near bank of Heart Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages move between -35°C in February and 4°C in July. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early July. The open-water window runs from around early July to about mid September in an average year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Heart Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Snowbed Creek is 38 km off. Treat Heart Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
