A closed sky with even light today, with a whisper of wind from the SSE and the barometer holding steady. On Toad Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Toad Lake sits within Colchester in Nova Scotia. Tidal water begins 10 km from here. At roughly 4 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Nova Scotia listings. Head to Lower Economy, 16 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Springhill at 25 km and Oxford at 28 km. It sits near the edge of the county, so check which rules apply.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Colchester records list Atlantic salmon, striped bass and brook trout among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Work Toad Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The seasonal spread runs -8°C to 18°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Count the season from break-up, usually mid April. Ice clears near mid April and comes back about mid December in a typical year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Anyone fishing Toad Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Economy Lake is 3 km distant. For Toad Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
