Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with an easy breeze from the ESE with the barometer flat. On Tait Lake, work the shallows early and the drop later first. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Guysborough County, Tait Lake is a Nova Scotia water. This is rolling bush ground. It covers about 4 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Our Guysborough County list holds plenty of bigger water. Antigonish is the closest place, 39 km off. Stellarton is 51 km away, with New Glasgow at 52 km. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Guysborough County include alewife, American eel, brook trout, Atlantic salmon and blueback herring. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Tait Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
August runs about 18°C on average, February about -6°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly mid December. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. The season on Tait Lake follows the weather closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, McCarthy Lake is 2 km distant. Check the position on Tait Lake before loading the car.
