Flat light and a covered sky today, with a light E breeze and no real change in pressure. The fish at Spider Lake are likely to sit near inflow corners and shaded margins. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Spider Lake lies in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. Around the bank it is mixed forest. Roughly 64 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With 6.7 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It ranks high for size among our Guysborough County listings. Antigonish is the closest place, 67 km off. Stellarton lies 72 km off, New Glasgow another 73 km. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Guysborough County records list alewife, American eel, brook trout and Atlantic salmon among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Spider Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -6°C at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to late December. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan around that when you fish Spider Lake.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Burnt Hill Lake, 0.9 km away. The position on Spider Lake is worth confirming on the day.
