An even grey lid over the water, with light air out of the W and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Scotch Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Scotch Lake is set in Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia. It sits at 41 metres above sea level. It measures about 29 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The full circuit measures close to 2.9 km on foot. North Sydney is the closest place, 8.4 km off. Beyond it, Florence at 11 km and Westmount at 12 km. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Records held for Cape Breton County cover striped bass, Atlantic salmon, Atlantic cod and alewife. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Scotch Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Averages move between -6°C in February and 18°C in August. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late December: that is the shape of an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. At Scotch Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Roach Lake sits 2.8 km off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Scotch Lake if anything is unclear.
