An even grey lid over the water, with a faint WSW drift with a settled glass. Start the search at Rocky Lake along structure within a cast of the bank. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Rocky Lake in the Halifax Regional Municipality part of Nova Scotia. It sits at 47 metres above sea level. It measures about 11 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. There is roughly 2.0 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. The nearest place of any size is Musquodoboit Harbour, 9.8 km away. The nearest city of size is Dartmouth, 46 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Halifax Regional Municipality include brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt and American eel. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Rocky Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Climate normals give 18°C for August and -5°C for February. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid April until roughly late December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Anyone fishing Rocky Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Big Duck Lake, 0.7 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Rocky Lake for certain.
