Solid cloud cover today, with mild air moving in from the ESE and no real change in pressure. The fish at Rafter Lake are likely to sit near the first drop-off and weed lines. The useful hours run afternoon into evening. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Halifax Regional Municipality, Rafter Lake is a Nova Scotia water. The water sits 67 metres up. The edge covers about 7.0 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. On our Halifax Regional Municipality list it sits near the top for size. Upper Hammonds Plains sits 6.2 km from the bank. Stillwater Lake follows at 9.4 km, then English Corner at 11 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt and American eel. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The near bank of Rafter Lake is often the one people ignore.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in August and bottom out at -6°C in January. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near mid December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Plan any trip to Rafter Lake around it.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. A launch point is recorded some 1.1 km off. Recorded parking is 1.1 km off, far enough to travel light. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Little Lake, 0.7 km out. None of that is settled for Rafter Lake in what we hold.
