Solid cloud cover today, with a faint SW drift and steady pressure. On Pug Lake, work points where shallow meets deep first. The strongest window is the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Pug Lake is one of the Yarmouth County waters in Nova Scotia. It sits in mixed forest country. Roughly 11 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Bank access stretches around 2.1 km in total. On size it sits at the modest end of our Yarmouth County list. The closest town, Yarmouth, is 47 km away. Halifax is the closest city, 177 km away. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Yarmouth County include American eel, yellow perch, Atlantic salmon and white perch. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Pug Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -5°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Break-up comes around early April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Average temperatures cross freezing around early April in spring and again near late December in autumn. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. The season on Pug Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. First Bear Lake, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Signs at Pug Lake carry more weight than any list.
