Solid cloud cover today, with a soft SW wind and pressure sitting still. Activity on Otter Lake should centre on the shaded margin through bright spells. Save your energy for the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Look for Otter Lake in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. The bank is 145 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 18 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The full circuit measures close to 2.2 km on foot. The town to know is Shelburne, 44 km out. Halifax sits 170 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth figures are not published for this one. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Yarmouth County include American eel, yellow perch, Atlantic salmon, white perch and alewife. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Otter Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Expect July near 17°C and January near -5°C on the long-run figures. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. The water is typically free of ice between mid April and mid December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Otter Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. For a change of water, Clyde Lake is 1.1 km distant. Where Otter Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
